Ebook macOS Shell for Beginners published

The first edition of the book macOS Shell for Beginners was published in spring 2017. At that time, Bash was still defined as the default login shell. Accordingly, the first edition, as well as the following editions 2 and 3, focused on Bash.

With the switch to Z shell (zsh) as the default login shell, an update to the book became necessary. This update was released as the 4th edition in German in 2024.
And now, one year later, the 4th edition is also available in English.

To use the shell effectively, it’s essential to understand the macOS file system. Therefore, the book begins with an introduction to this topic. It then covers the commands most relevant to daily shell use, answering questions such as:

• How do you navigate the file system in the shell?
• How do you create or delete files and directories?
• How do you copy and move them?

In addition, the book covers topics such as:

• Searching for files
• Determining disk space usage
• Archiving and compressing data
• Accessing cloud-synced files
• Accessing external devices
• Editing text files in the shell
